Rumors of a mid-engined supercar based on the Corvette have been around for decades
Dateline 11.24.15: Rumors of a mid-engined supercar based on the Corvette have been around for decades, basically ever since the Corvette came into existence. However, it never exactly came to fruition for possibly many reasons. But now, the rumor might actually lead to something since interest on both GM’s front and the consumer end have been picking up momentum, especially given GM’s new-found success with a lot of their new generation cars.
A new report from MotorTrend surfaced after the magazine sat down with Cadillac’s president, Johan de Nysschen. And in this sitting, de Nysschen apparently suggested General Motors might follow through with making a Corvette-based mid-engined supercar, with a possible Cadillac version as well.
This wouldn’t be the first time Cadillac pitched a mid-engined supercar idea since America’s top brass once made the Cien concept, a 7.5L V12 mid-engined monster that bowed at the 2002 Detroit Auto Show.
But of course, the Cien was never made. Thus, this potential new mid-engine idea would be the next attempt at a mid-engined supercar from Cadillac.
GM would be taking major steps to make it happen, such as designing and engineering an all-new platform for both cars, which they’d obviously share. Though not much else was insinuated in the discussion, with de Nysschen simply keeping the possibilities open by not denying the chance of this happening.
Either way, this could really make for some exciting times to see a mid-engined supercar come from Detroit. Let’s also not forget Ford has the new GT, which would make for an outstanding rivalry should GM produce one of their own.
