Dateline 3.29.16: A new world record for the fastest street legal all-electric car has been awarded to the Genovation GXE, a heavily-modified 2006 Z06 Corvette which hit a top speed of 186.8 mph at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida last month.

The GXE is a prototype created by small automotive company Genovation, and uses state-of-the-art electric motors and batteries to provide more than 700 horsepower and 600 foot-pounds of torque. Genovation said in a press release that they set the record on the first day of testing (certified by the International Mile Racing Association), and that they “fully expect” to push the vehicle even further.

THE GXE’S RECORD PROBABLY WON’T LAST LONG

Genovation’s record is impressive, but it’s not likely to stay unbroken for long. If the GXE itself doesn’t beat 186.8 miles per hour, then rival high-end EV teams —` such as Mitch Medford’s Bloodshed Motors — are likely to snatch a new record. Medford’s Zombie 222, a modified 1972 Datsun 1200, has previously been rated as the fastest street legal all-electric car in the world, and last year we followed the team as they pushed the Zombie 222 up to a rubber-scorching 173.2 miles per hour. Speaking to The Verge about Genovation’s new record, Medford said that the Bloodshed team was currently working on some adjustments to the Zombie 222, and aimed to break 200 mph at The Texas Mile in April this year.
