C7 Grand Sport Corvette, Best Street Vette Ever?

The BIG Return of the Grand Sport

2017-Grand-Sport-Corvette-1
Full-color 11×17 prints are available in our Amazon Store, HERE. Each print is signed by the artist, K. Scott Teeters, and numbered in a series of 500.

Dateline: 1.17.17 – The long-view story of the Grand Sport now has four chapters. The first chapter told the story of Zora Arkus-Duntov’s vision of offering to the public, lightweight, powerful, all-out racing cars that “could” be driven on the street – not unlike what Ferrari was offering – available through Chevrolet dealerships. It was a great idea, but went over like a belch in church with GM’s brass. The plug was pulled immediately and the five pilot Grand Sports were left to go fallow with no factory development or backing.

Part Two of the story happens 33 years later, in 1996. By this time, unless you seriously followed the early days of Corvette racing, you probably never heard of a “Grand Sport.” Continue reading

Stunning 3D Printed LS3 Corvette Model Engine – Video

3d-printed-ls3-corvette-engine

Dateline: 1.7.17 – 3D Printing Makes Working LS3 Corvette Model Engine

Most of us are at least lightly familiar with 3D Printing. It’s an amazing leap that has its roots in ink jet printing. Back in 1990 I bought the first HP ink jet printer as an alternative to a cheap $150 dot matrix or an expensive $2,500 laser printer. The HP Ink-Jet Printer cost me $950 and was promoted as a “deal.” But we never dreamed that the basic mechanics of the back-and-forth spraying of ink would one day lead to the spraying of a sub-strait material to build 3D “things”! Here’s the video…

All of the parts of this kinetically functioning LS3 model engine were 3D printed and the parts all go together just like the real thing. Continue reading

The Rarest of all C5 Corvette Models: 1999-2000 Fixed Roof Coupe

The pathway to the C5 Z06

Dateline 4.7.16: It is interesting how “time” changes perspective. Corvettes have always been performance sports cars. The first Mustangs were not “performance” cars; they were “sporty” cars that were later made into performance cars. From 1956 to 1980, Corvette buyers that wanted more grunt always had optional performance engines to choose from but there was never a separate performance model until the arrival of the ZR-1 in 1990. Imagine this black Vette on the white sand coming to bail you out!

Dateline 02.20.16: We first saw Dewey Powell’s menacingly ‘81-bodied Corvette at the Strictly Corvettes Show, in Atlantic City, New Jersey. One of the first things that caught our eyes was the stylized fishing pole rack and the way it was angled back from the middle to match the car’s nose. Then the tall tires and L88 wheel flares hit us. “WOW! What’s this?” We looked under the hood and saw a dual-quad 392 Hemi and wondered, “Who built this?!” Continue reading

Rare Finds: Mid-Year Driveway Discovery

Dateline 2.7.16: Do people park vintage Corvettes in their home driveways for decades without moving them? Apparently so, according to this story. An original owner actually parked his Corvette, a ’66 convertible with removable hardtop, in his driveway in 1990. Years later, he added a car cover, which cut down on the buy inquiries. 1953 NASCAR Corvette Racer

Illustrated Corvette Series No 226: The First Factory-Built Corvette Racer

Dateline 2.5.16:  There isn’t another car in Detroit history that has been so consistently involved in racing as the Corvette. Today, the base model C7 is more racecar than ever. But it all had to start somewhere and the generally accepted break-out racing event for the Corvette was Sebring 1956 when a factory-prepared 265 4-speed Corvette won 1st place in the Sports 8000 Class at the 12-hour race event. Chevrolet marketing ran print ads declaring the Corvette as “The Real McCoy.” But, we have to roll the clock back to 1955 to get to the very first factory-built Corvette racecar, and it wasn’t a road racer, it was a NASCAR racer. A “NASCAR”, Corvette? Yes! Continue reading
