How the Corvette America Flag Art Print Was Created

In the early 2000s, large Corvette events such as Corvettes at Carlisle began organizing a unique photo opportunity. Owners of red, white, and blue Corvettes would position their cars on a hillside to create a giant American flag. Aerial photographs and videos captured the display, creating one of the most memorable sights at the event.

Following coverage of the 2018 Corvettes at Carlisle show, I shared a video of the Corvette flag display here on Corvette Report. Apparently, the image stayed with me.

Shortly afterward, I had a vivid dream about the Corvette flag. As a result, I began wondering whether I could recreate it graphically.

At the time, my VETTE magazine feature, The Illustrated Corvette Series, had entered its 21st year. I already had side-view artwork of every Corvette produced from 1953 through 2018. After many hours of arranging, resizing, and repositioning the illustrations, the red and white stripes finally came together.

The Corvette at the far left of the top stripe is a 1953 model. The Corvette at the far right of the bottom stripe is a 2018 model. When Chevrolet introduced the mid-engine C8 Corvette two years later, I updated the artwork to include the new model.

The result became the Corvette America Flag print you see today.

A Corvette Legacy Worth Celebrating

Harley Earl unveiled Chevrolet’s dream sports car at General Motors’ Motorama in New York’s Waldorf Astoria Hotel on January 17, 1953.

One attendee stood out from the crowd: Belgian-born engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov. Captivated by the Corvette’s design and potential, Duntov later joined Chevrolet and became one of the driving forces behind Corvette’s transformation from stylish cruiser to world-class sports car.

Generations of Corvette owners helped ensure the car’s survival. They supported the Corvette through changing markets, corporate challenges, and shifting automotive trends. Their enthusiasm turned the Corvette into an American icon.

For decades, Corvette has been known as “America’s Sports Car.” While many competitors have come and gone, the Corvette remains in production and continues to represent American performance around the world.
