Vette Videos: Hail to the 1967 L71 427/435 Big-Block Corvette!!!

Okay, lets get this part out of the way first. True, true – a modern C6 Z06 or ZR1 Corvette can easily walk away from anything from the big-block days – HANDS DOWN! But as our pal Mike Beal once told us, the difference between modern Corvettes and the big-block Corvettes from the olden days is that the newer cars deliver “controlled horsepower.” The old big-block Corvettes delivered EXPLOSIVE horsepower.” Not only that, but there was a guttural rumble that let even the uninitiated know that this was one bad-ass machine. Vette Videos: C6 ZR1 vs Jeremy Clarkson – ZR1 WINS!!!

Watching Jeremy Clarkson reminds me of Dr. Greg House from the last TV series I watched, “House.” He’s blunt, brutal, but honest! In the past, he’s been brutally brutal on Corvettes, once describing the C6 he test drove as a “heaven and hell experience.” Then he closed out his report by saying, “It’s a funny car. I mean, it’s a Corvette, so obviously it’s rubbish. But, you can’t work out why.” Then he whispers, “I actually like it.”

To start the Callaway portion of the video, Top Gear’s Jeremy Clarkson gets the back end out about 45-degrees on the first turn. After dissing the stock suspension and brakes inability to cope with the added horsepower from the Callaway twin-turbo engine, Jeremy tries to dial in the Corvette. He doesn’t provide any info about the Callaway, it appears to be an ‘87 model which probably didn’t yet have any suspension or wheel/tire improvements. What the car is very good at is bringing the back end around, which if you’re not used to, can be unnerving, to say the least.

The C5 Corvette was supposed to be out years before, but financial troubles at GM kept pushing back the release date. While this was frustrating for Corvette fans, the positive part was that it gave the Corvette team the time to make the car as good as they could. The basic design of the C5 platform was started by Corvette chief engineer Dave McLellan. When mcLellan retired in 1992, former Cadillac engineer, Dave Hill was made the third Chief Engineer for the Corvette. The C5 was so well designed that by ‘99 engineers determined that they had done nearly as much to the car’s platform as they could, without designing a new platform. This naturally paved the way for the C6 Corvette.
